Athenian Owl silver coin, 1 oz minted in 2019 by the New Zealand Mint.
In the 4th century BC, the Athenian polis of Ancient Greece reached its peak. Historically important figures such as Socrates, Plato and Democritus strolled at some point through some of its streets and its agora, where one of the coins traded was precisely the one you have before you: yes, a very faithful copy of the original minted with the best silver from the mines of Oceania.
This coin, a drachma known as a glauko, was first found in 479, after the Persians had been defeated by the Greeks in the Second Medieval Wars.
On the cross is the owl, the animal of Athena, the goddess of the city, representing wisdom and intelligence. The design of the coin is spectacular: the outer face is differentiated from the central face by a background of thick regular lines.
In the centre is the design of the owl, displayed with perfect fidelity in which the bird is clinging to a trunk next to a small weapon of an olive tree, another of the symbols of the myth of Athena. To its right is the word 'ΑΘΕΑΘΕ', short for 'of the Athenians'. Below it is the metal from which the coin was struck, the quantity and fineness of the coin. The background of the coins has small bas-relief motifs that accentuate the beauty of the coin and give the impression of a fresco.
On the face is Ian Rank-Broadley's design of Queen Elizabeth II of England. It appears only from the neck upwards and is not overly detailed, but rather simple.
Its structure reproduces that of the face: an outer part formed by small regular thick lines and a centre in which the drawing is placed, with a very singular background with small bas-reliefs. Around the queen are her name, the territory where the coin was minted, its face value (2 dollars) and the year of issue.
This Athenian owl coin is made of 1 ounce of 99.999% pure silver, has a diameter of 39 milimetres and weighs 31.104 grams.
