Silver Quokka coin, 1 ounce silver, minted in 2020 by the Perth Mint, Australia's mint.
In 2020, the Perth Mint once again insisted on one of the most prestigious and beneficial projects in recent years: the launch of a new series of coins focusing on Australian wildlife. This time, it is the Quokka, a marsupial that is a kangaroo the size of a cat. It is only found in the western part of the country, very close to Perth, the company's headquarters.
The design of the animal can be found on the cross. The coin's layout is very simple: on the top there is a flat background that resembles the sky, and on the bottom a series of motifs that make up the surface of the earth. This appears to be a beach by the sea on the left and the lighthouse on the horizon.
The Quokka is right in the centre, occupying almost all the space. It appears with a touching face, holding a bitten leaf in its right hand and looking straight at the plane. The level of detail in his coat is spectacular: every hair on his entire body can be identified.
The cross is divided by an outer part and an inner part by a small line that borders the coin: the outer part, with a lighter colour, has the specifications of the coin, the name of the monarch and the country where the coin is issued. In the centre, which is a darker colour, is the face of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jordy Clark. It is an advanced design with many details on her head: her hair and crown are perfectly drawn.
The Quokka 2020 coin is minted from 1 ounce of 999,999 sterling silver, weighs 31.107 grams, has a diameter of 40.9 millimetres and is 3.5 millimetres thick.
