Silver 1 ounce Koala coin, minted in 2020 by the Perth Mint, Australia's mint.
Sponsored by the success of other animal series characteristic of Australia's wildlife, the Perth Mint was encouraged in 2007 to bring other of its icons to bullion coins representing the beauty of Australia's nature. Thus the Koala was born, with the intention of repeating the good results of the Kookaburra and the Kangaroo, among others. In only 10 years, more than 15,000,000 ounces of silver from this series were sold, resulting in an excellent reception by the international public.
It is in the cross where we find the design of the animal. As in previous editions, the structure of the coin has two distinct parts: the outer and central parts, divided by a line that runs around the entire coin. The outer part shows the name of the coin, the year of issue and the metal, quantity and purity of the coin.
In the centre is the animal, against a flat background that makes the focus on the koala. The koala appears clinging to a tree trunk, both in a high quality bas-relief. The design is rich in detail: the different veins of the branch and the different hairs of the animal as well as its claws, which are perfectly embedded in the tree, can be differentiated.
The edge of the coin is simply grooved, formed by straight lines arranged in a regular pattern and in bas-relief.
On the face, the traditional face of Queen Elizabeth II on a simple background and surrounded by her name, the country of issue and the face value of the coin (AUD 1). The contrast between the wavy lines of her curls and the regular, straight layout of her crown is striking.
