Silver coin of the Year of the Mouse from the Australian Moon series, from ½ ounce minted in 2020 by the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint, attracted by a growing demand for their products from the Asian market, launched a specific series of the Chinese zodiac, very similar to the one the Royal Mint has in the UK except with a more distinctive style and far from the Chinese graphic style. They turned the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac into very exclusive bullion coins, as their production is very limited.

According to Chinese tradition, people who were born in the year of the mouse are usually clever, skilful, kind, clever and charming, although somewhat stubborn in maintaining their views on certain aspects. They are also usually very thrifty, so they'll like this currency whether they like it or not!

The cross is where the mouse design is: the structure of the coin is very simple, as it simply has a flat background and the animal in the centre of the coin. The animal is surrounded by small wheat leaves that grow from the bottom of the coin, raised on two legs and holding the stem of a plant with its two front legs and another with one of its back legs.

His tail ends up running along part of the edge of the coin, and the high level of detail in his coat stands out, as does his face, which is endearing because he seems to be smiling as he looks at the sky. To his left, we find the name of the coin, the year it was minted as well as its zodiac symbol.

On the face, as usual in the series, is the traditional design of Queen Elizabeth II on a flat background. The coin was struck at an advanced age and has a crown with various decorative motifs. This contrasts perfectly with the wavy lines of the curls in her hair. On it are the characteristics of the coin, the name of the monarch, the country of issue and its face value (50 cent).

The Year of the Mouse coin of the Australian Lunar series is minted from 99.9999% pure silver, weighs 15.5518 grams and has a diameter of 25.6 millimetres.
